Ripsaw Manual


Ripsaw is a stereo super oscillator that contains 4 individual voices of 7 waveforms each that can be individually controlled in pitch. Depending on the number of pitch signals used, Ripsaw can be the source of wide atmospheric pads, searing leads and hollow thundering basslines.

power

Ripsaw requires a standard eurorack power supply with the ability to provide +12V and -12V. Ripsaw uses 42mA of current on the +12V rail and 5mA of current on the -12V rail. It is recommended that you select a power supply with 15-20% more current available than the sum of all your modules' requirements.

To power your ripsaw, turn off your case. Plug the included eurorack ribbon power cable into your case power distribution board, ensuring that the red line on the ribbon cable is aligned with the -12V marker on the case power board. The other end of the ribbon cable should be plugged into ripsaw with the red line aligned with the -12V market on the back of Ripsaw's board as shown in this image. Please make sure to screw Ripsaw and all other modules into your case before powering the case on - if a module or other unsecured object fall into your case and touch the power system, it can cause permanent damage to sensitive digital modules like Ripsaw and others.

controls

Encoder - turning the encoder will change the root pitch of all 4 voices on Ripsaw in semitone steps. The musical note of this pitch is displayed on the LED display to the right of the encoder.

Encoder Short Press - this will enter a screen on the LED display where you can fine tune the root pitch of Ripsaw in cents from 0-99 (one cent is 1/100 of a semitone). This feature can be used to match tuning with other gear that is not as accurate as Ripsaw's precision calibrated pitch inputs such as 1 volt per octave signal that is slightly under or over voltage.

Encoder Long Press - this will return the root pitch of all 4 voices on Ripsaw to the note C2 (65.41Hz)

LED Screen - this is where information related to the encoder is displayed

Shape Knob - morphs the waveform of all oscillators on Ripsaw between sawtooth and square waves

Spread Knob - detunes all of the 7 oscillators of each of the 4 voices on Ripsaw away from their current pitch. The amount of pitch offset is determined by a special table of offset value curves derived from a classic 1990s supersaw synthesizer

Shift Knob - increases the pitch of a second oscillator that hard syncs the phase of each of the oscillators you are hearing on Ripsaw - 28 individually hard sync'd oscillators at once! This brings in unique harmonics that further evolve the classic supersaw/supersquare sound.

Shape Control Voltage Input - signal at this input will offset the shape control from the shape knob position. This input expects voltages between -5V to +5V.

Spread Control Voltage Input - signal at this input will offset the spread control from the spread knob position. This input expects voltages between -5V to +5V.

Shift Control Voltage Input - signal at this input will offset the shape control from the shape knob position. This input expects voltages between -5V to +5V.

v/o Inputs - the four pitch control voltage inputs on Ripsaw each offset the pitch of a group of 7 detunable waveforms in Ripsaw. With no cables plugged in, you hear only voice 1 controlled by the v/o1 input. When you plug a cable into any of the other v/o inputs Ripsaw detects it and activates the associate voice - this means you can do 1, 2, 3 or 4 part melodic parts with Ripsaw, using only the number of pitch signals you prefer.

Out L and R - these are Ripsaws audio output jacks. Each of the 4 voices' 7 waves is spread evenly across the stereo spectrum for a wide stereo image. Mono operation is possible by using only one of Ripsaw's outputs.

Details

  • - Shape, Spread and Shift CV inputs expect voltages between -5V and +5V. They respond well to signals up to about 500hz - they will respond to faster modulation but may be unpredictable and noisy

    - v/o pitch inputs are calibrated between -5V and +7V and will respond accurately to pitch signal within this range. Please note that Ripsaw can only output signal between the note C0 (16.352hz) and C7 (2093hz). Signal attempting to offset the pitch of a voice outside this range will be clipped at these limits. Ripsaw's pitch inputs respond well to signal up to about 500hz - they will respond to faster modulation but may be unpredictable and noisy.

    - Ripsaw's stereo outputs produce a signal that can vary between 4V and 12V peak to peak depending on control settings and the number of voices activated - supersaw oscillators are very dynamic. Ripsaw employs output soft clipping and voice count volume compensation internally for a pleasant signal to use no matter how you have the controls set.

  • Ripsaw requires 6hp of horizontal space in your eurorack case and is 25mm deep measured from the back of the front panel, including the connector on the power cable.

  • Acid Rain Technology warrants this product to be free of defects in materials or construction for a period of one year from the date of purchase (proof of purchase/invoice required).

    This warranty does not apply to normal wear and tear, including art/panel wear, or any products that have been modified, abused, or misused. Our warranty is limited to manufacturing defects.

    Warranty repairs are provided free of charge, and other repairs we will try to provide at an affordable rate.
